How Traveling Your Gap Year Can Improve Your Resume

With unemployment high and the job market saturated with resumes, it’s important to stand out in the crowd. These days, employers are looking for education and experience whether you’ve just graduated or have ten years of work experience. Getting work experience and life experience while in college is extremely difficult. A way to circumvent that issue is by travelling the gap year between high school and college.

Plan

The key to having a successful teen travel during your gap year is to plan it. A gap year is for broadening your horizons, increasing your life experiences and bettering yourself as a person. It’s important to plan your gap year at least a year in advance. This means that while you’re planning your future education, sending off applications to colleges and taking aptitude tests, you also need to be working and saving for your gap year.

Save

Save money for your gap year. You do not want to be depending on your parents to fund your gap year. Employers are likely to ask what you did on your gap year and how you paid for it. It looks better to employers if you can say that you saved money on your own to pay for your gap year.

What Do You Want To Achieve?

Answering this question is the key to a successful gap year. Gap years are not about partying, drinking, hanging out with friends and working in fast food. Those things cannot go on your resume or in your cover letter.

What can go on your cover letter are such things as learning a foreign language or two, backpacking through Europe, learning about another culture first hand and volunteering. It all depends on what you want to achieve during your gap year and what you want to be able to put on your resume. The difference can mean getting the job and remaining unemployed after college graduation.

Goals

Once you’ve figured out what you want to achieve set progressive goals and put those goals on a timeline. If you want to spend time backpacking across Europe and testing your fortitude on nature, decide how long you want to backpack. After you finish backpacking, do something else. Learn a foreign language or study a couple different cultures.

Whatever you do, don’t stand still. Do several things and broaden your horizons and life experiences as much as possible. A gap year is for making the most out of life and finding new experiences. It’s also about developing talents, coping skills and communication skills.

End Your Gap Year a Wiser and Better Person

When it comes right down to it, making the most of your gap year will set you apart from the rest of the job seekers. Remember, once you graduate college liburan, you will be competing with other college graduates, people who needs jobs and those who are trying to find new careers and already have 10 or 20 years of work experience.

You need to show how you can benefit your potential employer. You need to be able to highlight and explain why you’re the best candidate for the job. A gap year can make that happen, but only through careful planning and execution.
